Unusual but beautiful place: not in the bookstore, but in the beer garden "spitalhaus" there was something special to celebrate on saturday: during the summer vacations, the summer vacation reading club, an initiative to encourage children and young people to read, took place throughout the state of bavaria. More than 180 public libraries throughout bavaria took part in this campaign in 2019.
The bad staffelstein city library was there for the first time this year. For the summer vacation reading club, a two-part selection list was created with many current books. The selection of titles was geared to different interests and reading abilities and thus offered an incentive to read for all children and young people from the first to the sixth grade. Whether adventure, love, fantasy, horror or crime: there was something for every taste. The participation was free of charge and the "rules of the game" were were easy.
You had to register at the participating library, received a club card and could use it to borrow the summer vacation reading club books reserved exclusively for club members free of charge. Once a book had been read, the students had to answer a few questions about the book they had read when they returned it, fill out a rating card and return it with their book.
The first book read or the evaluation card filled out and confirmed by the library entitled the student to participate in a raffle. Those who had read at least three books received a certificate and a surprise mare with small gifts. In total, more than 30 children took part in the campaign and read 154 books. 23 participants have read three books.
"Luisa, this is insane!" Ruth wagner from the city library held a special prize in her hands, a bright green backpack, and happily presented it to luisa zillig. The nine-year-old girl from unterzettlitz had read 30 books during the summer vacations. Among them were nine volumes of the now 11-part children's book series "the magic flower store. I liked it best of all, says luisa, the story of the girl whose aunt owns a flower store. Here happen very strange things, she laughs.
The city's youth representative holger then played the lucky fairy at the raffle: the winners were sophia zillig and lea pfarrdrescher, both from unterzettlitz (each a ticket to the dino-park altmuhltal), lilly meisner from puchitz (a voucher for the forest climbing garden), niklas thomalla from bad staffelstein and lena kurpanik from loffeld (each a voucher for the ice cream parlor). "You have read diligently, this shall be rewarded", the chairman of the bookstore association erwin richter was pleased. The unclaimed prizes from the raffle can be picked up at the public library.
Next year, the municipal library will once again be part of the "read what works" program during the summer vacations.
