Bamberg on the way to becoming a bicycle-friendly community

The admission of the city of bamberg as a member of the working group of bicycle-friendly municipalities in bavaria (AGFK) is recommended – so the conclusion of a four-headed delegation of the state association, led by its leader sarah guttenberger. Mayor andreas starke (SPD) was convinced of the bamberger strengths and at the same time announced: "it is our claim to want to become better and not to rest on our laurels." The "main evaluation" required for membership is to take place if possible in 2019, it says in the message from the city hall.
Johannes ziegler from the bavarian state ministry of housing, construction and transport emphasized at the end of the all-day "preparatory visit the potential of the world heritage city of bamberg to meet the demanding admission criteria. The objective of the visit was to evaluate the status of bicycle-friendliness and to determine recommendations for the municipality in connection with the admission procedure. The delegation, supplemented by the local traffic watch and representatives of the german bicycle club (ADFC), was able to get a good picture of the bamberg situation.

Positive conclusion

The day’s program was divided into a theoretical part with presentations by thomas beese, head of the city’s construction department, and the city’s traffic planning department on the status of cycling in bamberburg, as well as a tour of the city’s surroundings.
In the end, the AGFK cycling experts drew a positive conclusion: a committed and open-minded administration, diverse working groups and an exchange of the various interests and stakeholders were praised, as was the infrastructure found with open one-way streets and cul-de-sacs, bicycle lanes or the exemplary bicycle parking garage at brennerstrabe.
In the case of the latter, however, there was also a desire for actions to increase the utilization rate. The current update of the traffic development plan with its comments on the topic of bicycle traffic and the specially published bicycle city plan were also very pleasing. Positive also the effort – under not always easy framework conditions – to intensively examine and investigate possibilities for improving the cycling infrastructure. An effective parking space statute, citizen dialogue to report praise and criticism and deficiency indicators as well as e-pedelecs for the administration were also praised, as was participation in the nationwide "stadtradeln" (city cycling) program with its own special competition for schools.
But recommendations were also made. Thus, the establishment of an additional dedicated position of "cycling officer full time or more staff for implementation. At the current 30 percent, a further increase in the share of bicycle traffic would be ambitious, but possible. For this, however, the decision on a concrete target – five percent in the next seven years was proposed – was absolutely necessary. At the same time, cooperation with the district and in particular the surrounding municipalities should be strengthened, also with a view to the commuter issue. To achieve this, it is necessary to create structures and to work together on a project-oriented basis.
